Louis Hautier, a feisty Belgian and his talented wife Josephine arrived on foot from Yale in 1861, where they opened the Globe Hotel. The Hautier's raised a family of five children while operating the hotel. Besides being a venturesome businessman, Louis was also a naturopath, and collected many natural plants from the surrounding area to make his medicines.

Josephine Hautier, a fabulous cook brought the customers into the Globe Hotel.

Mrs. Hautier had been an Opera singer in San Francisco and Victoria, and was also a gourmet cook. Due to her cultivated ways and her sophistication, she was a woman ahead of her time, and was not accepted by the people of Lytton. She became an alcoholic, and died young.
