John Murray of Scotland settled in Spence's Bridge in 1870 where he owned and operated a general store. By the 1880s Murray owned most of the property on the north side of the river. In addition to a fine orchard he had an interest in a greenhouse, a stable, and the Morton House Hotel. Murray also had one of the first seed houses in western Canada, selling seeds in little brown paper bags with his name stamped on them.
