Born in Maine, USA, of Scottish parents, Ithiel Blake Nason travelled to California while still a boy, and mined quite successfully. There during the 1849 Rush. As one of the thousands in the Cariboo Goldrush of 1861, he mined at Mink Gulch with a partner W.A.Meacham, where in 1866 they set up a sawmill and sold lumber . By the 1870s he was married to Mary Watson, and together they raised a large family at Richfield.
