An American coal miner Yorke had moved to B.C. with the start of coal mining on Vancouver Island. With the discovery of gold on the mainland Yorke moved toYale, where he proceeded to buy up land in strategic places and became one of the wealthiest men in the country. Yorke opened the first restaurant and roadhouse in Yale in 1858. (British Columbia Gazette, July 25, 1858, p3.)
