Interpretive Signs on the River Front Trail and Downtown Photo Murals
The Museum worked with Economic Development to update the interpretive signs on the Riverfront Trial and to install photo murals in public spaces in downtown Quesnel. Walk the Downtown Trail along the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers in a 5.2 km loop or explore the 4.3 km West Quesnel Trail. You will discover over 30 interpretive signs, heritage artifacts and sculptures which document the history of the community and the diverse cultural groups which have contributed to its development.
In downtown Quesnel, along Reid street, you will encounter life size portraits of early twentieth century inhabitants, taken by our first resident photographers, C.D. Hoy and C.S. Wing. You will also find Interpretive panels documenting the history of Quesnel's Chinese Community on Barlow Avenue and the downtown walking tour signs which provide a history of individual buildings or a series of buildings at a particular location.
We gratefully acknowledge financial support from Western Economic Diversification Canada, the Province of British Columbia through the 150 Time Immemorial Grant Program and Northern Development Initiative Trust.
Renovation of the Museum Phase 2
The Quesnel Museum and Visitors’ Centre completed a major renovation commencing in September 2020 and reopening in June/July 2022. Updates includeda new front façade with an accessible and energy-efficient entrance, redesigned layout to improve traffic flow and a new year-round accessible bathroom. The “behind the scenes” space were reorganized to meet museum and public health standards, creating a meeting room and catering kitchen, an office, and a curatorial workspace. The project separated the ventilation systems for the building and the public bathrooms and also addressed drainage issues to reduce safety hazards in the winter.
This project follows recent upgrades to the area, including a new LeBourdais Park playground, redesigned Museum and Visitors’ Centre parking area with RV parking, and multiple Museum renovations over the last few years
Following the City’s Economic Development Transition Strategy, this project supports Destination Development and Business and Resident Retention and Attraction. To learn more about the strategy, visit www.quesnel.ca/transition
